Recognizing the species on my photos — visible details

Length 60-65 cm with a 1.2 m wingspan, all-black plumage with violet iridescence, massive bill, shaggy throat feathers and diamond-shaped wedge tail.

Habitat

Coastal sea cliffs, rocky gorges, and rugged mountain crests.

Diet

Highly opportunistic omnivore: small vertebrates, carrion, insects, wild fruits.

Photographing the species: field experience

Exposure must capture feather sheen on deep black plumage without losing eye contact in harsh light.

Remarkable facts & hide notes:
  • •Performs barrel rolls and inverted flight purely for social play and aerial enjoyment.
  • •Has a vocal vocabulary exceeding 30 distinct calls, from guttural 'cronk' to bell-like notes.
  • •Pairs mate for life and defend traditional cliff territories for decades.
