The European Bee-eater, the bird behind TheLittle83

A dazzling explosion of turquoise, sun-yellow and chestnut feathers, the European Bee-eater is the undisputed mascot of TheLittle83. Breeding in the Var from mid-May through late August, it enlivens riverbanks and coastal scrub with constant aerial acrobatics.

Recognizing the species on my photos — visible details
Slender 28 cm profile with a long black curved bill, bright yellow throat bordered by a dark gorget, chestnut crown and luminous turquoise underparts. Pointed rufous wings and elongated central tail feathers are diagnostic in flight.
Sandy riverbanks, soft embankments, open vineyards, coastal scrub and sunny pastures.
Wasps, bees, hornets, dragonflies and large flying beetles snatched on the wing.
Photographing the species: field experience
Capturing bee-eaters in flight requires at least 1/3200s shutter speed and quiet patience beside known perches. Late afternoon golden light makes their iridescent plumage glow with warmth.
- •It rubs wasps repeatedly against wood or wire to discharge the venom sting before swallowing.
- •Pairs excavate nesting tunnels up to 1.5 meters deep using bill and feet.
- •By late August, family clans gather into flocks to cross the Mediterranean towards sub-Saharan Africa.
