The European Roller, azure jewel of the Var scrublands

With its electric turquoise plumage and warm chestnut mantle, the European Roller is one of the most stunning Mediterranean birds. Nesting in scattered sunny valleys across the Var, it provides unforgettable photographic moments.

Recognizing the species on my photos — visible details
Jay-sized (30 cm), stunning turquoise-blue head and underparts, cinnamon back, and broad wings displaying vibrant electric blue in flight with vigorous flaps.
Open farmlands, old orchards, garrigue edges with hollow trees and sunny vineyards.
Bush-crickets, large beetles, wall lizards and small rodents snatched from the ground.
Photographing the species: field experience
Rollers are wary and require a patient approach from marked paths. Using the 200-600mm telephoto handheld in early morning light reveals the structural brilliance of their plumage without disturbance.
- •Named 'roller' after its breathtaking tumbling displays and rolls performed in mid-air during courtship.
- •Its feathers contain no blue pigment; the colour is produced purely by light refraction on keratin nanostructures.
- •Frequently nests in old woodpecker cavities or holes in stone ruins.
