Recognizing the species on my photos — visible details

Spotted Fritillary with checkered orange-and-black patterns; Painted Lady with salmon-pink, black, and delicate eyespot marbling.

Habitat

Flower-rich garrigue, thistle patches, pine forest clearings and vineyard margins.

Diet

Flower nectar; caterpillars feed on mulleins, plantains and thistles.

Photographing the species: field experience

Telephoto macro techniques allow comfortable working distance without disturbing butterflies on blossoms.

Remarkable facts & hide notes:
  • •The Painted Lady performs multi-generational migrations spanning thousands of kilometers across the Sahara and Mediterranean.
  • •The Spotted Fritillary serves as a sensitive bio-indicator of pesticide-free traditional habitats.
  • •Provides vital pollination services to endemic Mediterranean scrubland flora.
