Recognizing the species on my photos — visible details
Length 45 cm with a blue-and-black bill, warm buff mantle, and elongated mane-like plumes cascading down its nape.
Habitat
Shallow freshwater and brackish marshes with lush emergent vegetation.
Diet
Small fish, frogs, dragonflies, and aquatic beetles.
Photographing the species: field experience
Deeply cautious; clean frames require stationary blind patience where channels open through reedbeds.
Remarkable facts & hide notes:
- •Erects its decorative nape plumes when agitated or during courtship display.
- •Often mistaken for an egret in flight due to its pure white wings contrasting with its buff body.
- •Migrates to West African wetlands by late August.
