Recognizing the species on my photos — visible details

Tall 90 cm profile with a 1.9 m wingspan, pearl-grey plumage, white head with black crest plume, and stout yellow bill.

Habitat

Fish, amphibians, small mammals, and crustaceans.

Photographing the species: field experience

Its stillness allows refined composition and focus adjustments before it strikes prey with precision.

Remarkable facts & hide notes:
  • •Produces pellets containing the bones, scales and hair of undigested prey.
  • •Nests high in the canopies of large Aleppo pines in traditional heronries.
  • •Utters a loud, diagnostic croak when flushed in flight.
